Skylar's Story:
Please meet "Skylar". He is 14 months old. Skylar's owner took him to a shelter for absolutely no reason at all except that they didn't want to be bothered with a dog anymore. The shelter was full and he was nearly put to sleep! Skylar is a fabulous dog! He is happy, and friendly to everyone. He is great with other dogs, cats, and children.
Updates as of November 19, 2007 - We returned from the Vet today with bad news. The limp that Skylar has will need a surgical repair. Apparently, the x-rays showed an injury to his left hip that is causing him quite a bit of discomfort and will become worse over time. The good news is that it is not hip displasia and it is fixable. The unfortunate part of the situation is the expense of this surgery. NoVa Rottie Rescue is completely funded by charitable donations and $1500 is not a small bit of change.
It is our intention to find a way to get Skylar's hip repaired and we will need your help to do it. Besides making a one time donation, we are asking that you consider sponsorship with regular weekly or monthly contributions. This surgery will depleat our Rescue's funds and make it hard to save special needs cases in the future. We started a special fund recently that is specifically for Rotties that require this level of care. It is called the "Save A Dog Fund"(S.A.D). You may have seen it under "Dylan's Story". We have rehabilitated him and now he is ready for adoption!!!
If you would like to meet Skylar, and see how wonderful he is, let us know. You only need to spend 5 minutes with this sweet boy to know that he needs this surgery so that he can have a long rewarding life. He is only 11 months old and deserves a chance! The vet said Skylar will make a full recovery from this surgery!
Updates as of December 5, 2007 - We have been trying hard to raise money over the last several weeks for Skylar's surgery but have not met our goal. Although the initial cost is $1500, the cost of rechecks will also be hard to cover. We will be holding an ebay auction soon to try to sell a beautiful sterling Tiffany & Co. necklace that was donated to the rescue for Skylar's benefit. This wonderful contributor could not give cash but she was able to part with this necklace that could be sold to help NoVa with the vet bills.
Please consider what items you may have that could fetch a price and contact us with the details. We will not stop until we have saved this wonderul boy!
Updates as of January 28, 2008 - We are happy to announce that on February 11th Skylar is scheduled for his hip surgery! This surgery is for an injury not displasia and he will make a full recovery. He may be healing for a couple of months but when he is ready, this will be one very fine dog that will be going to some very lucky home! He is gentle with cats, other dogs, and good with children that have expereince around an active dog.
We would only consider a home with children that have recently had or currently live with an active dog. Many people that have older dogs apply for young active ones and feel that experience is enough, but there is a big difference with a young, playful, active dog around toddlers. If you currently have young children, please only apply for him if you currently have a young dog as well.
We prefer fenced yards. Adoptions in MD,DC, and Northern VA ONLY!
Updates as of February 16, 2008 - Skylar had his surgery on February 11th and he is doing remarkably well. He was only on pain medication for the first few days and is now completely off of it and he is already starting to use his leg again. He goes back to the vet for a recheck on the 19th. He is resting comfortably and taking full advanatage of all the additional attention.
Skylar is an excellant dog. He is a gentle fella that loves all dogs, and all people. He is good with children, and just loves puppies. Skylar has an amazing trust that anyone and anything he meets is a new friend in his life. He has never shown any fear or any aggression. This sweet dog will be a wonderful addition to someone's life. He will spend his time showing nothing but love and loyalty.
Skylar will need about 3 months to heal completely from his surgery. He will need to continue with the vet to monitor his progress. If you would like to continue sponsoring his ongoing vet care we would be very grateful for any help. You are welcome to apply for this wonderful dog but he will not be going to a forever home until the end of April.
Updates as of May 10, 2008 - Skylar's leg surgery has healed. He is no longer in any pain, he will not need another surgery in the future. He does have a slight limp because a small peice of bone was removed to alleviate the trauma but he has fully recovered and is now waiting for a forever home with a family to love him. This sweet boy will make someone a great family dog. Skylar loves to run and play with other dogs and now he can! That slight limp doesn't slow him down a bit. He is a happy, friendly, wonderful dog.
